George Moncur insists Colchester United are capable of tightening up at the back - without sacrificing their entertainment value.

The U’s boast one of the best goalscoring records in League One but have also conceded more goals that any other team in the top four divisions.

Colchester were beaten 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers last weekend and are still trying to strike the balance between defence and attack, particularly away from home.

But the U’s leading scorer Moncur is adamant they have the kind of players capable of getting things right - at both ends of the pitch.

Moncur said: “We’ve definitely got the players, both going forward and defensively.

“It’s just about putting the two things together on a Saturday.

“Hopefully we can work on it more in training and put into our games, because we’ve definitely got it in us.

“We’ve got loads of different options with what we can do and how we can play as a team and that just shows the quality that we have.

“We’ve got great attacking and defensive ability within the team - it’s just a matter of putting it together in a game.”

Moncur has hit the net six times this season for Colchester and is on course to beat his highest-season tally of nine, registered in the previous campaign.

The 22-year-old added: “It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet and have chances to score.

“I’m getting chances in every single game now and I’ve got the right players around me who create chances and can put the ball in the net themselves, too.”

Meanwhile, Colchester boss Tony Humes admits his side need to discover more consistency in League One, with around a third of the season now gone.

The U’s lie in 16th position in the table, having won five, drawn five and lost six of their 16 games so far.

He said: “We haven’t been consistent enough.

“At the minute, we’re going from game to game and I think that’s the same for every club in the league - there’s no rhyme or reason to it.”
