STOKE by Nayland Golf Club reached the culmination of a year of competitions with their Finals Weekend.

The first match, the Nayager Trophy, was played on Saturday in near perfect conditions on the Gainsborough Course.

The four ball better ball competition was contested by Ian Thompson and Tim Dickens against Greg Smith and Jamie Mardell.

Smith and Mardell were two up at the turn and with vice-captain Thompson and Dickens only able to halve the 16th hole they claimed victory.

On Sunday, all the finals were played on the Constable Course, again in wonderful Autumn weather.

The day opened with the prestigious Scratch Cup with past club captain Richard Cross taking on current junior captain, Alex English.

It was always going to be a tight match and so it proved.

Cross edged ahead with a good up and down on the ninth hole and it was not until the 13th that English holed a long putt to bring the match back to all square.

This was the turning point with the junior player winning the 14th and then a birdie on the 15th put him in control.

The match was sealed on the 16th when Cross missed a tricky six foot putt and English secured his first Scratch Cup.

The day continued with Tim Dickens and Mike Tuck playing for the Barber Cup.

After the disappointment of losing the day before Dickens wasted no time in getting his nose in front.

Giving four shots away to 17-handicapper Tuck, match play specialist Dickens looked set for a straight forward victory but Tuck came back to force the match to the 18th hole.

The Barber Cup went to Dickens, winning one up.

The newly-formatted Shaw Plate saw category four players David Boyden and Chris Williamson contesting the final, after both qualified through the two best nett scores in the July Medal.

Boyden held his nerve to hole a six foot putt to win the match on the 17th.

Other Finals: Spring Foursomes: Don Crofton & Adrian Leach won 1 up v Simon Hawkins & Luke Pearce.

Stoke Foursomes: Kyle Wooster & Dan Mills won 6/5 v Louis Freeman & Tom Everett.

Constable Bowls: Ian McKay & Fran Chandler won 1 up v Clive & Margaret Bentley High-Lo: Andy Higginson & John Williamson won 4&3 v Tom Everett & Tim Dickens.

Pamela Randle, had a magnificent hole-in-one on the seventh hole on the Gainsborough course playing in the ladies’ competition on Saturday.

The ladies battled it out in two finals competitions in soggy conditions on the Gainsborough course.

Both the matchplay competitions had been played as knockouts through the summer months, until only two players from each league remained.

Edel Rew beat Lesley Hitchcock to win the June Davies Memorial Trophy for ladies with handicaps 21 to 36.

And Jude Hanner defeated Sybil Paton to capture the Elizabeth Evans Rose Bowl for ladies with handicaps of 0 to 20.

Following the finals, the rest of Stoke-by-Nayland’s ladies played a fun competition for harvest.

Teams of three contested the event, with two stableford scores counting for each team.

Pamela Randle, Angela Cudmore and Anne Hemmings were winners.

They had first pick from the abundant harvest table, after the ladies brought in fresh fruit, vegetables and homemade jams and preserves to reflect harvest.

Items were also offered for sale by the lady captain, with the money raised going to her charity, the Eden Rose Coppice.
