Colchester United's wait for a first win of the season goes on after they were comprehensively beaten 4-0 at Fleetwood Town this afternoon.

The U's suffered their first-ever defeat to the Cod Army after they were well beaten at Highbury Stadium.

U's boss Tony Humes had made one change to his starting line-up, with George Moncur recalled in place of Sammie Szmodics.

Indeed, Colchester started well and were unlucky not to go ahead after barely two minutes when Gavin Massey cut in from the U’s left and unleashed a long-range strike which Fleetwood keeper Chris Maxwell was forced to push over the bar.

George Moncur’s effort sailed wide after that but both sides were increasingly guilty of conceding possession as the half wore on and Colchester themselves trailing in the 24th minute.

The U's failed to clear from a corner and Cod Army midfielder Jimmy Ryan held off a couple of challenges before firing into the top corner from 25 yards.

Colchester were still reeling from the setback when they conceded again, less than three minutes later.

Antoni Sarcevic was afforded too much room outside the U's area and David Ball’s deflected effort looped over Parish and in.

Gilbey’s 30-yard strike well dealt with low down to his right by Maxwell just before half-time but Colchester went in at half-time trailing and things got worse for them, early in the second half.

Proctor was allowed space in the six-yard box to convert, after Amarii Bell’s cross from the left.

Colchester sent on Dion Sembie-Ferris for Darren Ambrose immediately after the goal and George Elokobi and Sammie Szmodics were also introduced to the fray, later in the half.

The U’s improved a little after Proctor’s goal and more of the contest was played in the Fleetwood half.

Two Massey efforts flew just wide of the target in the space of a few minutes, while Macauley Bonne's shot was parried in the area by Maxwell.

But it was too little, too late from the U's in the final half hour and Fleetwood polished off their win with four minutes remaning when substitute Jamille Matt converted Bell's low  cross to complete Colchester's misery.
