BILL Guthrie and Paul Morden topped the honours list at Maldon’s Men’s Guest Day.

Twenty-two pairs took to the course to play nine holes of golf, followed by lunch and another 18 holes in the afternoon.

The format of the day was a 27 hole, betterball stableford competition and Guthrie and his guest Morden (Thorpeness) ran away with the overall first prize on 63 points, with morning and afternoon scores of 22 and 41 respectively.

After illness caused the withdrawal of one of the original entrants, the stand-in pair of Elliot Hawkins and Nigel Cook claimed second place overall with a total of 59 points.

Mel Knowles and Kenny Kerr (Burnham) took third spot on count-back from Pete Hawkins and Syd Wells (Hintlesham Hall) – both with 58 points.

The prize for the best morning score went to Malcolm Burnett and Graham Guthrie (professional) on 23 points, with Steve Lawrence and Steve Nott (Three Rivers) claiming the afternoon prize with 38.

The nearest the pin prizes were won by Elliot Hawkins (fifth) and Paul Morden (ninth/18th).

The prize for the longest drive on the seventh/16th hole went to the immediate past captain’s guest, Syd Wells.

All 44 players enjoyed what was a hugely successful and entertaining day with excellent weather and with the Maldon course in superb condition.

On Saturday, Maldon hosted a friendly match against Forrester Park as part of the Captain’s Charity mid-summer barbecue and disco in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

The whole day was superbly organised by Maldon member Pat Coyne.

Teams of 25-a-side contested the match play contest, with Maldon running out winners by just one point. The golf was followed by an evening of entertainment which included a fantastic barbecue run by Maldon committee chairman Tony Davis, a disco, charity auction and raffle with many excellent lots and prizes up for grabs.

Initial calculations suggest that approximately £1,700 was raised for captain Jim Culleton's charity.

Maldon’s Seniors competed for the Fred Naylor Bowl on June 17.

The runaway winner with an outstanding 45 points was Tony Broom.

Broom’s round included a marvellous eagle two on the par four ninth hole.

Second place went to Graham Page on 37 while Ged Claydon claimed third with 36.
