Colchester United boss Tony Humes says no blame should be apportioned to goalkeeper Chris Lewington following their 6-0 defeat at Chesterfield.

Lewington came in for his first league start for the U's, after regular shot-stopper Sam Walker was ruled out because of a knee injury.

He made some good saves but it proved to be a disappointing night for the former Dagenham and Redbridge goalkeeper and the rest of the Colchester side, following their comprehensive loss at the Proact Stadium.

However, Humes said: “There’s nothing down to Chris there - all of the goals were good quality goals.

“Chesterfield’s passing, movement and quality was too much for us.

“Chris made some good saves and that’s what he’s there for.

“That’s his job and we’ll pick him up but we can’t apportion blame to him.

“Sometimes it just clicks for a side but the challenge to our players is to be better and deal with it.

“We just didn’t get the off the ball stuff right and we couldn’t contain their movement and rotation, which was fantastic.

“That’s what we want from our players and it would be a great DVD for them to have, to show how we want to play.

“The biggest thing is the work rate, on and off the ball.

“And we were out-worked, out-battled and out-played - you can’t hide away from that.”
