Essex University Amateur Boxing Club teenager Jamie Hercus powered to an impressive victory in his first-ever bout.

The 15-year-old secured a strong stoppage win over Heroes’ Sam Ridgewell, in Attleborough.

Hercus, weighing 76.5 kilogrammes, started well and connected with a fierce left jab early on.

A quick flurry ensued but Hercus responded strongly, landing combinations of right crosses and uppercuts that backed Ridgewell onto the ropes.

The referee separated the boxers, with Hercus quickly steaming back into the attack.

After a flurry of punches the referee gave Ridgewell a standing eight count, with only the sound of the bell saving Ridgewell from more damage.

The King’s Lynn boxer tried to establish his mark in the second round, with a straight left right.

But Hercus was not to be denied and after repeatedly landing right uppercuts and left rights, the referee stopped the bout to give the Essex University boxer an emphatic win.

Charlie Shave was unlucky to lose his bout against Finchley’s James Costen, after another committed performance.

Costen took the centre of the ring from the opening bell, making it hard for Shave to take control.

But three-punch combinations helped put Costen on the back foot and slowed his work down.

Shave gave his opponent too much room, in the second round.

But the Essex University boxer stood his ground in the centre of the ring after that.

His three and four punch combinations rattled Costen and in the end the Finchley boxer was fortunate to seal victory.

Essex University boxer Naomi van Steenbergen enjoyed a unanimous points verdict win over Halstead’s Vicky Weltz at the Eastgate show, in Debenham.

The university lecturer has trained hard since last October, ready for her first bout.

And she needed all of her energy and skill to defeat Weltz over three, two-minute rounds.

Weltz pushed forward from the first bell but van Steenbergen was accurate with a stiff left jab and right cross that repeatedly connected.

After being backed into the corner, the Essex University boxer maintained her poise, moving deftly away with an overhand right hand to win the first round.

Van Steenbergen dominated the second round, despite Weltz’s determination to stand her ground.

With both boxers breathing hard in the final round, the Essex University boxer knew she had to keep her concentration.

She repeatedly landed with a right hand to clinch a well-deserved victory, in a hard-fought bout.
