Alex Wynter admits Colchester United’s enforced break is not ideal after the disappointment of conceding a last-gasp equaliser at Gillingham.

The U’s looked like they were on the verge of securing back-to-back league wins for the first time this season when they led with only seconds to go at the Priestfield Stadium.

But Gills skipper Doug Loft equalised in the sixth minute of stoppage-time to salvage a 2-2 draw for the hosts and deprive Colchester of what would have been a precious victory.

Tony Humes’ side now have to wait almost a fortnight to resume their League One survival battle due to the postponement of their scheduled game against Swindon Town this weekend because of international call-ups – and defender Wynter concedes that it is not a perfect scenario.

Wynter said: “Ideally, we’d have another game quickly after this disappointment.

“It’s always better to have another match around the corner after something like this.

“But we’ve got 13 days now to go and train hard and get ready for the Easter weekend.”
