CLACTON have a wooden spoon battle this weekend.

The Seasiders sit at the bottom of London League division three south and travel to Billericay tomorrow.

With both sides already relegated and just one point separating them then pride and the chance to avoid finishing the season at the bottom of the pile is at stake.

They both have three games to go but this match will probably decide their final league position.

When they met at Vista Road in December, it ended in a rare 34-17 win for Clacton.

In Eastern Counties League division one, Mersea Island will be looking to bounce back from their 80-5 drubbing at Ely two week’s ago.

However, it will be a difficult task as runaway leaders Southwold, who have already secured promotion, are the visitors to the Glebe on Saturday.

In divison two south the final fixtures of the season are being played.

Promoted Colchester seconds are due to host Ipswich YM seconds, while second placed Harwich & DovercourT travel to bottom club Brightlingsea.

Mistley’s hopes of securing third place in the divison took a blow as their oppostion, Stowmarket seconds, have withdrawn from Saturday’s fixture.

They had been hoping to win the division two south contest by a large margin, in order to give themselves a chance of regaining third place in the table and overtaking Hadleigh.

Mistley will be awarded a 20-0 win because of Stowmarket’s decision, so still have a slim chance of finishing third.

However, it is out of their hands as they have to hope Hadleigh slip up at lowly Felixstowe.

Nevertheless, proud chairman William Meston believes it has still been a fantastic season all-round at Mistley.

“Despite an indifferent second half of the season, the spirit and morale in the club is the best I’ve known since becoming chairman five years ago,” he said.

“We’re all very upbeat and it would have been great to end the season in third place, behind Colchester and our local rivals, Harwich. While that now looks unlikely, it’s still been a very successful year.”
