Colchester United manager Tony Humes praised his side's character after they came from behind to beat Chesterfield 2-1 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The U's were behind after barely a minute when Sam Clucas capitalised on Frankie Kent's injury to fire past Sam Walker.

But after a sluggish first-half display, Colchester roared back in the second half.

Rhys Healey equalised five minutes after coming off the bench as a half-time substitute.

And leading goalscorer Freddie Sears netted the winner with four minutes to go with a delightful shot from the edge of the D, after being fed by Gavin Massey.

Sears' eighth goal of the season helped Colchester claim back-to-back home wins and they have now taken seven points from a possible nine, after recovering from losing positions.

Humes said: “It’s another game we’ve come from behind in to take the points and it grows belief and a real team spirit.

“We’re delighted to win the game after having the early setback of conceding the goal and losing Frankie Kent in the first minute.

“We were on the backfoot straight away from the outset and we weren’t as fluent or controlled as we had been.

“But we battled and we showed character and stuck together and scored two fantastic goals, to win the game."
