Witham Town captain Paul King believes he and his team-mates should be looking towards the upper part of the Ryman League premier division table rather than over their shoulders at the relegation scrap.

Town will head to Peacehaven and Telscombe tomorrow on the back of two morale boosting cup wins and know that a victory on the road would take them above their hosts in the top-flight standings.

Witham may have only won one of their last four league games, but they included narrow defeats by the premier division’s top two sides in that run and have now lost just once in seven outings in all competitions.

The most recent of those was a history-making FA Cup win at Needham Market last weekend, which followed a League Cup win at Maldon & Tiptree that demonstrated the strength in depth of Witham’s squad this year.

And even though those two wins were against division one north opponents, King believes Town should be looking upwards as they return to premier division action.

He said: “I had a look at the table the other day and saw that we have two games in hand over some of the sides above us.

“If we turn them into points, like I know we can, it will put us in the mix towards the top end of the table.

“I know it’s early doors and we’ve still got to make sure we survive in this division first and foremost, but I can see no reason why we shouldn’t be looking upwards.

“We showed great character to win in the FA Cup at Needham last week and the boys are buzzing after that win.”
