U's have plenty of choice in hunt for new goalkeeper

Gazette: On the hunt - Colchester United manager Joe Dunne is looking for a new goalkeeper to replace Mark Cousins, who has left to join Dagenham and Redbridge. On the hunt - Colchester United manager Joe Dunne is looking for a new goalkeeper to replace Mark Cousins, who has left to join Dagenham and Redbridge.

Joe Dunne says he has already been inundated with requests from goalkeepers wanting to sign for Colchester United.

But the U’s boss insists he is willing to bide his time in his quest to sign a back-up keeper, following long-serving Mark Cousins’ exit on Monday.

Colchester are on the hunt for a new shot-stopper to act as back up to first-choice custodian Sam Walker.

Walker is now the U’s only senior goalkeeper, following Cousins’ decision to join Dagenham and Redbridge on a two-year deal.

Dunne said: “We’re in the process of trying to bring one in.

“When it went public about Mark leaving for Dagenham, we were inundated with requests.

“We certainly have plenty of choice but I’m patient with the situation and I’m open-minded about it.

“When we were in this situation before we managed it well and Sam Walker was a product of our patience.

“One of the things about Sam coming in was that it was through the loan system and we have options.

“I know what we’re looking for in a goalkeeper and it’s a key specialist position.”

Do we need another Goalie?
Can't we promote the best youngster that we have to reserve, so he plays 30 minutes if Walker gets injured, then bring a loan in to cover long term when necessary?

It's easy to become inundated with player requests until they find out what the wages and length of contract is and then they won't want to know. No player of any repute, regardless of position, wants to join the U's. Loan players are ok but we can only take on youngsters. Some supporters I know have given up supporting the U's because we only seem to mostly deal in short term loans. They find it difficult to make allegiance to players who are here today and gone tomorrow. The worlds governing bodies are rumoured to be putting a cap on the loan system in due course anyway.

We signed Sam Walker didn't we? a lot of the clubs in our league will have similar budgets, even coventry with their tiny crowds last season! We have a brighter future than most

I agree with this.
However we must commit ourselves to the GK and 10 players ON the field.
You look at all the staff on or near the bench on match day and wonder.
I just feel that having a manager and assistant manager rather than player coach is an expense it might be difficult to justify this year.
The Academy should be a self funded separate operation.

we need a decent 2nd goalkeeper as cover for Sam, as well as offer him some competition. Yes he's our first choice but he needs to have some competition otherwise he could get complacent and form drop. And to say 'no-one' wants to join Col U is a stupid thing to say.
