Dunne will not wait forever for out-of-contract players

Gazette: No waiting game - Joe Dunne wants to resolve any contract talks with his players in the next few weeks. No waiting game - Joe Dunne wants to resolve any contract talks with his players in the next few weeks.

Colchester United manager Joe Dunne has insisted he will not allow contract talks with his players to drag on this summer.

The U’s are in negotiations with a number of their out-of-contract squad members, with several of them hoping to land new deals.

It has already been confirmed that striker Clinton Morrison will leave the club.

But the likes of Dominic Vose, Ryan Dickson and David Wright are all in negotiations to secure fresh contracts at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Dunne said: “I’ve spoken to the ones who are out of contract.

“Some have said “yes” and some have said “no” and we’re in negotiations.

“Some have said they want to think about it and I fully understand that.

“I didn’t expect anything to be tied up straight away - these negotiations will go until the third Saturday in May and then I’m moving on.

“It’ll be a lot quicker than it was last year and there’s plenty of players out there this year, so I’m not messing around.”

Just what we need - a little decisiveness. I think some of those saying "no" are gambling somewhat as very few have covered themselves in glory consistently this season and may not attract the interest they think. Magnus a few years ago being a prime example of this.
Vose I would love to see stay and I am a fan of Wilson. Dickson has been hot and cold and Wright, for me, never did what Izzet did and probably came with a heavier price tag wages wise too. I'm fairly convinced that Eastmond (although a little dissapointing this year), Bean and Gilbey can ensure he wouldn't be missed an awful lot.
Joe has to do what is right for the future of this club and owes very few players anything given some of their displays this season. Anyone he can recruit that gets anyway near showing his fight, determination and will to succeed will see us a stronger prospect.

Agree, this is what we need a bit more tough not so nicey nicey. Vose would be a good addition. The others I think should go, it's these average players that are the reason we've been down the wrong end of the league last 2 seasons.

It's a buyer's market out there at the moment. Most lower division clubs are having to trim the wage bill. Colchester may not be the most glamorous destination but it offers a stable and well run environment, and this is certainly not the case at many clubs. The core of this squad has the potential to be successful next season. With a few out and a couple of additions (like a Kevin Watson and a Wayne Brown) and the play-offs are definitely within reach.

I agree JD, I just hope you stick to it this year. You made similar noises last year, but then let yourself down by not keeping to it. I hope JD looks into the character and attitude of any player he takes on a bit more closely this next season as I'm not convinced this has been a particular strong point in the past.

Disagree with my compatriot Melbourne Calling....I think the U's need another two good strikers, Cureton & Iwelumo (little and large), both prolific scorers and the best form of defence is attack. They proved it with U's getting direct promotion in 2006 and a 10th place finish in the Championship the next season. U's have been lacking that sort of set-up for some seasons now and it puts fear in the opposition with two regular goalscorers, moreover it is great to watch too. Lets get two good strikers instead.

Why not, playing up front. We need a goal scorer, But Bristol Rovers want a hefty fee, so no chance.

That kind of pairing happens only once in a generation for a little club like ours. Each of those players was kind of average before he joined the U's, and reverted to being kind of average afterwards. The same goes for the legendary partnership of Bobby Hunt and Martyn King, 75 goals between them in one season, 50-odd years ago.
We might just see it happen with Bonne and Szmodics, but if it did happen, it would just be for a season, for after that they would be on their way to bigger clubs.
