LIVE Crewe Alexandra v Colchester United

This live event has finished

Latest

  • We'll have live updates from Gresty Road as Colchester and Crewe clash in a crunch League One game towards the foot of the table. With both sides only just outside the drop zone, neither can afford to lose so it could be a tense afternoon in the north east.

4:53pm

That's it. It ends 0-0

4:49pm

Three extra minutes announced.

4:48pm

Ryan Dickson replaces Magnus Okuonghae and the tension is building as this game enters its last knockings.

4:42pm

Joe Dunne brings Drey Wright on for Sanchez Watt.

4:40pm

Another Crewe susbstitution sees Uche Ikpeazu replaced by Vadaine Oliver

4:39pm

U's corner by Freddie Sears finds head of Tom Eastman but it goes well over.

4:35pm

Should be Crewe leading as Mathias Pogba heads wide at the far post when it was easier to hit the target. That's his last action too as he's replaced by Leitch-Smith

4:32pm

Some Keystone Cops defending by the U's as they live dangerously at the back but it's still 0-0.

4:30pm

It will be surprising if this game stays 0-0.

Crewe should have made more of great run by Mathias Pogba as he pulled ball back across the U's box but no-one had read it and could get a telling touch.

4:26pm

65 U's hit the post - again......

Gilbey does well to win ball in midfield feed Ibehre who passes across to Sears, whose shot clatters off the post.

4:24pm

The theme of the first half has continued with defences on top and both sides lacking a real quality edge in front of goal.

If anything, it's the hosts who have been the most threatening but you can see why both are struggling towards the foot of the table.

4:13pm

Bright start by U's to the second half but first real chance goes to Crewe.

Free-kick wide on left by Jon Guthrie flew over everyone but fell at the feet of Adam Dugdale and fortunately for the U’s Marcus Bean was in the way to block his fierce shot to keep it at 0-0.

Nine minutes of the half gone and it's still goalless

4:06pm

Really noticeable that Colchester are playing into the wind now.

Too many balls forward ran away in the first half but first one forward was much easier for Ibehre to hold up and create an attack from at the start of the second half.

4:05pm

We've off again as Crewe get us going again here at Gresty Road

3:52pm

Garratt was the busier of the two keepers, but Crewe have had their chances with Inman and Ikpeazu asking questions of the visitors.

However, the defences have been more on top in the opening 45 minutes and some better quality is needed to break the deadlock.

3:51pm

There should be plenty to encourage U's boss Joe Dunne for his half-time talk as they had managed to get on top towards the end of the first half.

Gavin Massey was looking particularly lively wide on the left, but Sears, Bean and Ibehre were all posing attacking threats as the half wore on.

3:48pm

That's it - half-time and it's 0-0 between Colchester and Crewe.

3:47pm

Attacking players are linking up well now and Garratt is being worked harder.

45 mins and ball is poached on edge of Crewe box by Massey. Sears shot is saved by Garratt though.

3:45pm

U's are doing well towards the end of the half and starting to carve out some chances, but it stays 0-0 with two minutes to go to the break.

3:40pm

U's need to take account of the strong breeze on their backs in this opening half as too many clearances and balls forward are either running out or into the arms of Garratt in the home goal.

3:36pm

There are 180 U's fans in the crowd of 4,603 here today

3:35pm

Referee Wright is allowing a few hefty challenges to go so it's a good-paced open game.

33 mins Freddie Sears cross from wide on left finds head of Ibehre but his contact isn't enough to turn it towards goal.

Referee Wright is allowing a few hefty challenges to go so it's a good-paced open game.

33 mins Freddie Sears cross from wide on left finds head of Ibehre but his contact isn't enough to turn it towards goal.

3:26pm

At the other end, Bradden Inman pulls the trigger from 25 yards and stings the hands of Sam Walker, but it stays 0-0 after 24 mins.

3:25pm

Good break down the U's right with neat interplay between Ibehre, Bean and Watt opens chance for Ibehre.

He opts to shoot from wide when maybe should have pulled it back to a team-mate and ball goes past the post.

3:12pm

Game has settled down a bit now and neither side has really got on top. Uche Ikpeazu has probably had the best sight of goal but a poor finish meant he never threatened Sam Walker's goal.

3:07pm

Watering of the pitch is evident as a couple of the U's players have slipped over in the early stages.

3:07pm

Bright start from U's and most of the play has been in Crewe half, but hosts break to force a corner. Nothing comes of it though.

3:02pm

Colchester kick-off towards the Gresty Road end of the ground and ball goes straight out for a throw in.

3:02pm

Here we go - Kevin Wright blows his whistle to start the match.

2:59pm

The sprinklers are finally off and we'll be under way soon.

2:59pm

U's wearing kit of white shirts with black shorts and black socks.

2:58pm

Teams come out on to the Gresty Road pitch.

2:52pm

Amusing moment as U's goalkeeping coach Ademola Bankole gets surprised by a sprinkler jet just as he walks past it. He'll thank the Gresty Road groundsman later I'm sure.

They have been putting a fair amount of water on to the surface before kick-off so it should be quite a slick surface for passing.

2:45pm

For those interested, today's referee is Kevin Wright from Cambridgeshire.

2:44pm

There's 15 minutes until kick-off here at Gresty Road and the U's players are going through some shooting drills. Clearly Joe Dunne wants to see his players convert more of their chances as that's what cost them at home against Oldham.

2:30pm

The Railway men's subs are Steve Phillips, Kelvin Mellor, Ajay Leitch-Smith, George Ray, Vadaine Oliver, Oliver Turton, Billy Waters

2:29pm

Crewe line up with an unchanged side too. They beat Shrewsbury 3-1 on Friday to bring themselves level with the U's on points and go again with Ben Garratt, Matt Toole, Mark Ellis, Adam Dugdale, Mathias Pogba, Byron Moore, Bradden Inman, Jon Guthrie, Liam Nolan, Uche Ikpeazu, Anthony Grant.

2:26pm

The U's have named a subs bench of Mark Cousins, Ryan Dickson, Clinton Morrison, Tosin Olufemi, Drey Wright, Craig Eastmond, Dominic Vose.

2:25pm

Colchester start with Sam Walker, Brian Wilson, Magnus Okuonghae, Tom Eastman, Alex Wynter, Alex Gilbey, Sanchez Watt, Gavin Massey, Jabo Ibehre, Freddie Sears, Marcus Bean.

2:24pm

The teams are out and going through their warm-up drills on the pitch here at Gresty Road. Despite some worn patches, it looks a decent enough surface from where I'm sitting, but that is about a mile up at the very back of the large main stand.

2:21pm

U's manager Joe Dunne has gone for an unchanged starting line-up from the one that began the 1-0 defeat by Oldham Athletic at home on Good Friday.
