U's slip to defeat at home to Oldham

First published in Sport by

COLCHESTER United’s relegation fears deepened this afternoon after slipping to a 1-0 defeat at home to Oldham Athletic.

The U’s started the day in 18th place, a place and a point below their visitors.

But after losing this battle between two struggling sides, they now have genuine fears of the drop heading into Monday’s trip to Crewe Alexandra.

Oldham’s winner came in fortuitous circumstances just seconds before half-time.

Right-back Connor Brown burst into the box and delivered a low centre from the right, which deflected off defender Tom Eastman’s boot and looped into the U’s net.

Overall, it was hard on the hosts, who certainly created the better of the few chances in the game.

Alex Gilbey had their best inside the first three minutes, powering into the area to meet Freddie Sears’ corner.

However, with the goal at his mercy, he headed over.

Jabo Ibehre should also have done better with another headed effort, nodding straight at Latics goalkeeper Paul Rachubka from Gavin Massey’s cross.

Colchester continued to have the better of it in the second half, without created a genuine, clear-cut chance.

Gilbey saw a long-range effort deflected narrowly over.

Substitute Dominic Vose then unleashed a curling effort from distance that went just wide, while Ibehre tried his luck with a low shot that was deflected narrowly wide of Rachubka’s post.

Absolutely gutted today. We didn't play too bad, but Oldham where terrible. There keeper didn't have one save to make. The reality is that oldam where in the relegation scrap and are woeful, but they have still come to our place and beaten us. We are staring relegation straight in the face. Joe Dunne out.

Another complete shambles, come on Joe Dunne time to admit your not good enough to be manager, you may be Col u through and through ,and you may well be a good footballing coach, but you dont cut it as a manager.Oldham were very poor, yet we failed to even score let alone beat them,iv never been so embarrassed to be a Col u fan ,as i am at present, anybody who can take any positives from todays game or performance must be raving mad or stupid,if Joe Dunne remains as manager then next saturdays game against Brentford will be the last game me and my family will attend,as we wont be renewing our season tickets,Your rubbish as a manager Joe Dunne if you think otherwise your a very deluded man

FFS, how can you blame the manager when the team he puts out has 24 shots with 7 on target against a team who has 4 shots with 1 on target, blame the players not the manager.

Why on earth would any manager bring on two substitutes with two minutes to go??? A lot of Joe Dunne's substitutions have confused me but today's was ridiculous!

A dreadful result from a game which clearly demonstrated why we’re (unfortunately) still in the thick of a relegation scrap! We are incapable of converting our chances into goals, while keeping the opposition out at the other end. We didn’t play badly, but at this stage of the season the result is all that matters; Oldham understood that and came away with an ugly win that virtually secures their place in League One.

Alex Gilbey, a promising young player, doesn’t appear to be a naturally gifted goal scorer; even the much maligned Andy Bond would’ve scored that sitter in front of an open goal... The finishing from the whole team was atrocious; there just hasn’t been any progression in our attacking play (bar the odd flourish against some of our relegation rivals) over the 18 months Joe Dunne has been in charge!

Three games left to save our League One status:

Crewe (A) ~ we’ve lost our last 10 consecutive league games against the railwaymen.
Brentford (H) ~ flying after sealing promotion; no doubt a large contingent of Bee’s fans will want to rub their success in our faces after the events of 8 years ago.
Walsall (A) ~ unbeaten this season against the current bottom 9 sides.

Three tough games, including two of our bogey teams; it’s not looking good at all for our survival chances at this juncture.

Last week when we overcame Stevenage I thought my previous judgements about Joe Dunne were wrong. However, yet again. I am dumbfounded as to why he makes such foolhardy tactical errors. Bringing on two substitutes in the 88th minute is just crazy! Had we been winning then fair enough, to eat away at the clock but not when we were clearly trying desperately to score to achieve at least a point out of the match! We have so-called ex Premier League academy players in Sanchez Watt and Craig Eastmond who really have not impressed at League One this season. The whole team with the exception of Dominic Vose when he came on looked hopeless, pathetic, inadequate, almost accepting their fate. I can accept losing but in the manner in which we lose it is embarassing. What more can you say? Keep your job until we get relegated, then please do the honourable thing Mr Dunne and Mr Kinsella and resign! I hope Mr Cowling sees sense and listens to the fans! Joe Dunne OUT!!!
