COLCHESTER United boss Joe Dunne has sung the praises of “exceptional” defender Alex Wynter.

And he says the 20-year-old played beyond his years in Saturday’s vital 3-2 victory at Stevenage.

Defender Wynter made his full debut and was one of the club’s star performers in a success that left the U’s in 18th position - three points clear of fourth-from-bottom Carlisle.

“Alex came in and looked like he’d been playing there all his life - his young life,” said proud manager Dunne.

“I was very pleased with his performance.

“He did exceptionally well against a difficult opponent and the great thing about him is that he can play anywhere across the back four."
