Colchester United have signed young defender Alex Wynter on loan from Crystal Palace.

The 20-year-old, who can play at either centre-back or right-back, has boosted the U’s defensive ranks until the end of the season.

Wynter, who has also had loan spells at Eastbourne Borough and Sutton United, has so far made two senior appearances for the Eagles.

Colchester boss Joe Dunne had been looking for cover for his back four, with eight games of the League One campaign remaining.

And Wynter is set to go straight into the U’s squad for their game at Notts County, on Saturday.

Dunne said: “He’s a young player who we’ve had in before who has done pretty well.

“He played a couple of under-21 games for us."

Wynter said: “There are some big games coming up and it’s a great opportunity for me.”

I thought Joe Dunne said in a recent interview that he was after a player with experience?
Since when has a 20 year old who has been bombed out on loan to Eastbourne and Sutton been a player with experience!

We have had all season to strengthen our defence, especially one of the centre backs. This does smack a little of desperation.
In the summer our defence needs to be totally overhauled, personally Magnus, Thompson, Wilson,Dickson can all go. The only one I would keep would be Eastman and give the young Olefumi a chance at right back.

Totally agree Mojo. Half the problem is lack of communication on the pitch. I can't remember seeing anyone in the back four vocally organising the defence against a set piece from the opposition. I've seen Morrison vocally organising the players around him when called back to help out. Wilson has to be the worst Captain to wear the blue and white shirt as he shows no motivational authority whatsover.

I'm sure someone will be along later to tell me different and produce the statistics to prove our defence is no worse now than in year dot.

I am not sure of the exact rule; but once committed to the maximum player budget under financial fair play restrictions (as I think we we are); I believe we can only recruit youngsters (Under 21) . This probably explains yet another youngster; but let's not be judgmental until we have seen him in action. Luke Garbutt was only a kid; and he was superb; but others like Alie Sesay....Daniel Pappoe ...Mason Spence...er... not!

For any others (e.g. 'adults') I think we need to demonstrate an emergency or injury crisis situation. Simply deciding that our current contracted full backs (or existing loanees) are not good enough doesn't meet that criteria; and we can't fake injury!

For once I do find myself agreeing with others about the captaincy. I rate Brian Wilson as a decent player; but not as a captain. But who else is suitable? Morrison does have the gob, but no longer has the legs/skill; whilst I have never forgiven Magnus for his disloyalty after ditching us and then begging to come back. We can't assume that (say) Marcus Bean or David Wright is any better communicator as we rarely hear them speak.

I suspect that Brian Wilson is probably deemed the best that we currently have; albeit my guess is that he would be delighted to hand over the arm band given all the moaning. We could seek to recruit a player/captain in the summer transfer window (as we did with Aussie International; Chris Coyne ...er that didnt work either); but until the kids mature even further; I can't see us finding a new Doogie or Kem Izzett etc.

It would be interesting to hear the suggestions of others; as I can't think of an ideal candidate in the current squad that deserves a regular place.

John White captained the U's on a few occasions and did fine. He has been captaining Southend all this season and - until recently - they have been doing OK. They could yet make the play-offs.
Oh, I forgot, we didn't send him there on loan. JD told him he could take a big pay cut or find another job, so he left. And that is one reason why our defence has so often struggled this season.

John White should still be at the U's playing every game and as captain, the biggest mistake dropping him for monthes on end and then offering rubbish contract!!
