U's legend Duguid to hang up his boots

Colchester United legend Karl Duguid has called time on his successful playing career.

The U’s player-coach, who celebrates his 36th birthday today, says he will hang up his boots for good at the end of this season.

Duguid, who has made nearly 600 league and cup appearances during a career that has spanned two decades, has not played a competitive match for nearly 18 months.

He last pulled on a U’s shirt in their 2-2 draw with Shrewsbury Town in October, 2012.

Duguid said: “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that I’ll not be playing next year.

“It’s probably the right time for me to say that I’ve done my bit and this will be my last season as a player."

In all honesty I'm not surprised as he hasn't featured for sometime and appears to be in training for the next U's Manager, which I'm sure will happen one day as Cowling does appear to like to promote within.

Always showed great passion on the pitch and was an excellent leader on the field, shame some of his passion for wearing the blue and white shirt as Captain hasn't rubbed off on our current captain.

I'm sure Duguid will be part of the U's setup for sometime to come.

Was upset not to see him when we had so many injuries earlier in the season and think he would have been good to have with his experience. He should of course stay at the club, very passionate and very good with the fans.
