Colchester United have splashed the cash on new covers in a bid to protect their pitch from the elements.

The U’s are hoping that the waterproof sheets will act as a temporary barrier to help protect their Weston Homes Community Stadium surface from the rain.

Joe Dunne’s side, who have not played in League One for nearly three weeks, are due to host promotion-chasing Rotherham United on Saturday.

Hope it works as well!! I live approx 15 miles south of Peterborough and after the rain we've had in the last couple of days (after the postponement of our game last Saturday) I'm amazed that Peterborough played at home last night in the Johnstones Paint Trophy!!

The story In the printed Gazette yesterday (Thursday) suggested these covers would not arrive in time to save the game against Rotherham on Saturday. I hope they got this wrong.
