STRIKER Jamie Guy proved to be the hero for Heybridge Swifts as his late debut goal earned Heybridge Swifts a point.

Heybridge had to come from behind twice against visiting Dereham Town at Scraley Road to earn a Ryman League division one north 2-2 draw.

Dereham had the better of the early exchanges and looked the sharper of the two sides.

And it was the visitors who took the lead on 15 minutes through Luke Tuttle.

But Swifts drew level nine minutes later when Neil Cousins got on the end of a Ben Newson cross to put the ball in the back of the net.

The visitors had a golden opportunity to retake the lead but Nicky Howell’s powerful header rebounded off the bar.

Dereham went close again with a header but Craig Bussens’ effort went over the bar.

Swifts then went close and visiting keeper Matt Powley pulled off a great acrobatic save on 41 minutes to deny Jamie Guy scoring his first goal for his new club from 20 yards.

Powley had to be called on again just before the end of the half to deny Cousins.

After the break, Guy went close again to scoring on his debut but his free-kick on 54 minutes went just wide.

However, it was the visitors that went ahead when Tuttle put a scrambled effort into the back of the net on 66 minutes.

The visitors nearly extended their lead when Shaun Bammant’s effort flashed across the face of goal six minutes later.

Dereham then almost gifted an equaliser when Powley miskicked a clearance but was able to recover and save Guy’s effort.

The visitors came back at Swifts but a long-range effort from substitute Aaron Kay went wide.

But it was Guy who saved Swifts deep into injury-time with a 95th-minute equaliser Division rivals Maldon and Tiptree had a mountain to climb in their match at Brentwood Town.

They went behind on nine minutes when Paul Shave pounced to give the visitors the lead.

Worse was to come on 24 minutes when Tony Martin doubled Brentwood’s advantage.

Despite the best efforts of both sides there was no addition to the score-line.
