U's defeat is tough to take - Dunne

Gazette: U's defeat is tough to take - Dunne U's defeat is tough to take - Dunne

Colchester United manager Joe Dunne said his side's home defeat against struggling Crewe Alexandra was hard to take.

The U's lost 2-1 to the Railwaymen, after Luke Garbutt's deflected opener was cancelled out by two goals in the space of three second-half minutes from Chuks Aneke and Tom Hitchcock.

Dunne said: "We gave them a chance to get back in and they took it.

"That's sport and we were at the receiving end and it's very hard to take.

"We've ended the year on a bit of a low but we had a couple of highs before that and that's us.

"Anyone who's followed the club through its existence will know that only twice in our history we've found some consistency.

"We have to pick ourselves up and crack on, which we will do."

Tough to take? You'd have thought Dunne would be used to it by now!

The fact that it's what were so used to is what makes it so annoying. We not learning, and not progressing (on the pitch). I hope the youth team set up works, maybe well have something to cheer at..... In about a decade.

With one or two exceptions place the players on the transfer list. This pathetic lot neither have the character nor will to be successful as they repeat the same woeful performances over and over again. The repetitive nature of these second half performances, where we just fail to emerge from the dressing room, should not be tolerated by the manager or chairman any longer and decisive action is called for and should be taken. They have had plenty of opportunities to put the matter right, but it keeps coming back to haunt us time and time again.

On Boxing day it was Dr Jekyll, to-day it was Mr Hyde. It is so predictable. Why can't we have a run of consistent performances? We are not going to be relegated but we are certainly not going to finish in the the top 15. It is going to be a struggle right through to the final few games. The games against the weakest teams are the worst, for most of them will fight like tigers, as Crewe Alexandra did this afternoon.
If Luke Garbutt stays, we stay up, but if he goes, it is going to be a serious struggle.

Unacceptable performance yet again! Yet what will YOU do, Mr Dunne to change it? The only man with the power to change things is Mr Cowling! I would suggest he consider the statistics and look long and hard at the man that steers the ship... The buck lies with him.. you are seeing crowds dropping, revenue sources dropping, fans increasingly frustrated and players not playing for Mr Dunne. Surely you, Mr Cowling, can see what you have to do and to all those doubters who say 'who else would want to come in?' The answer is simple - there are many, many young and experienced managers who would love the opportunity to turn our club's fortunes around. I fear that unless remedial action is taken very soon, then we will end up in yet another relegation scrap for the remainder of the season.

I don't think we need to take drastic action just yet. Maybe if JD would accept that he needs a plan B and a plan C. His style of play is nice to watch but not always the best way to play. JD needs to remove the blinkers and give his team a way to counteract when a team storm out at you. After all isn't that what we did against Stevenage. We struggle when teams do it to us, so come on Joe give the boy's an option because although your style of play can get results, when other teams storm out at us we struggle.

Well we fell back to earth with a whimper! Please, please do something about our defence. Eastman & Garbutt are the only two that can defend! It has been the same for two/three seasons now, yet for some reason we have not brought in any permanent signings other than Thompson (not good enough either). As George Graham said start at the back and get a solid defence than the rest will come.
In the second half the midfield were chasing shadows and totally devoid of any invention (again). Vose after looking very good against Stevenage was poor. Eastmond could not get into the game and David Wright did absolutely nothing. The team needs a shakeup from back to front. How some of these players get a game week in week out on these performances I just do not understand.
Please Mr Dunne be brave and drop Wilson, Magnus, Wright. I thankyou.

Mr. Dunne picks the team so the buck stops there. Who can honestly say when we were 2-0 up to Stevenage they weren't nervous that Stevenage could still get back in the game. Yes in the end we won 4-0 but it wasn't a convincing performance and errors where still there to see in the back four.

In my view if Mr. Cowling is not prepared to relieve Joe of his duties he should look at the team below him, especially those who remain from the Ward days. The fitness trainer, the goalkeeping trainer and the other hangers on, they all need to go. Bring in fresh blood, fresh ideas and passion back to the club, an experience man to help guide Joe if needs be, a kind of director of football, who actually knows what is involved to bring the best out in people.

And I don't mean a new job title for Robbie Cowling or a member of his family.

Yes it costs money but it can't be cheap keeping all the Wards hangers on either and it has to be a better option than what we have now.

If it works at Newcastle why can't it work here ?

Just get rid of him. He comes out with the same excuses wvery single week and it's just not acceptable. Yes we have injuries etc but you cannot use that as an excuse. We have lost twice against the bottom of the table team with both performances being effortless. Dunne needs to ram it into their heads and not wimper about any longer if he is to remain in charge.

Cowling needs to man up and bring in a new face to change this disastrous season. Please, for the sake of your pride walk Dunne- it's become embarrassing.

So why is it that when we win the articles on the gazette lie baron of comments like some sort of tundra with the occasional well done JD, yet when we lose people are up in arms and want Dunne's head on a plate ? years of marital frustration perhaps ? or can people really be this fickle ? (that might be a good gazette report)

We let ourselves down yesterday and got what we deserved. We looked comfortable in the first half and they never really troubled us. Yet we sat back second half (im sure with MK Dons 3 days away in mind) and tried to "control the game". I'm dissapointed in the players for the lacklustre sit back performance and continuing to play it long to Morrison when jabo came off as the poor 5"10 bloke obviously struggles in the air.

If you play morrison, you pass it on the floor or put it upto his chest, simple as that.

JD should not have taken Jabo and Vose off when they arguably provide our best attacking threat and with being 1-0 at the time i think it may have been the catalyst that lost us the game.

I agree that this season we play some Jeckall and Hyde stuff and that makes us very Unpredictable Boris, as we dont know whether we will beat peterborough before getting smashed by notts county. The players need to step it up and gather some consistancy. I feel Dunne may need to sort out a few of the "attitudes" in the camp

January Transfers:
IN:

Striker on loan (Big, strong, high work rate)

OUT:
Bond
Morrison (at the end of the season)
