Late Lee header salvages point for U's
A last-gasp header from Elliot Lee salvaged Colchester United a dramatic 2-2 draw at Rotherham United this afternoon.
Lee's header bounced over the line from the underside of the crossbar, after Rotherham had failed to clear a corner deep into stoppage-time at the New York Stadium.
Colchester took a sixth-minute lead when Marcus Bean dived to plant a header in off the post from Luke Garbutt’s corner.
But Rotherham were back on level terms less than two minutes later through Matt Tubbs, who struck home after the Colchester defence had failed to deal with Joe Skarz’s ball into the area.
And the U’s fell behind midway through the first half when Kieran Agard scored from six yards, after Colchester had not cleared Kari Arnason’s long throw into the area.
Rotherham almost added a third when goalkeeper Sam Walker saved from Mark Bradley’s stooping header at his near post.
And Tubbs’ sent an overhead kick over just before half-time, as the Millers ended the first half on top.
Luke Garbutt fired a low shot wide after U’s substitute Macauley Bonne had picked out his attacking run on the edge of the area, in the opening stages of the second half.
Bonne, Andy Bond and Sammie Szmodics were sent on early in the second half, in a bid to find an equaliser for Colchester.
Gilbey forced Millers keeper Collin to push away his long-range strike late on before Lee's first-ever senior goal rescued a point for battling Colchester.
