Dunne consulted ex-U's boss Ward prior to Bolger loan signing
Joe Dunne has revealed he consulted his Colchester United predecessor John Ward prior to signing Cian Bolger.
Bolger, who joined for the U’s on a month's loan from Bolton Wanderers last week, played under Ward on loan at Bristol Rovers last season.
The 21-year-old centre-back enjoyed an impressive debut for Colchester last Saturday, helping them to a 1-0 win over Peterborough United.
Dunne said: “I spoke to John Ward recently and we talked about Cian.
“I know that he had been on loan at Bristol Rovers and I think John wanted to keep him but Bolton wanted him to take the next step up.
“He’s played a lot of games for Bristol Rovers who are a big club in that league and that shows his progression.
“The next test is the league higher and he was a player on our hit list, so we’re delighted to get him.
“It’s a good opportunity for him to take this step and the next one will be the Championship.
“I think it’s a credit to Dougie (Freedman) that they share the same philosophy of getting the players out on loan.”
