Regent, Maldon and Witham aiming for Essex Senior Cup progress
BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT will again be without inspirational defender Kevin Hughes for tonight’s Essex Senior Cup tie against Redbridge.
The centre-half - who boss James Webster recently described as “outstanding” - is unavailable for the third-round trip to Oakside.
Regent, who otherwise have a full squad to select from, knocked out Tendring neighbours FC Clacton in the previous round and are currently flying high in fourth spot in the Thurlow Nunn League.
Webster said: “It’s a big game for us and a competition we’re really enjoying being involved in, so we’re looking forward to it.”
MALDON & TIPTREE and WITHAM TOWN are also in Essex Senior Cup action.
Maldon have a home date with Ryman One North rivals Waltham Forest.
They are back at Park Drive, having seen their long unbeaten run there grind to a halt as a result of Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Romford.
It was Maldon’s first home defeat since March 20, 2012, when Ilford paid a visit and won 3-2.
Saturday’s setback brought to an end a remarkable record of 32 home league games unbeaten and it was the first under manager Terry Spillane.
Witham, second in Ryman One North and buoyed by Saturday’s 2-1 win at Brentwood, are at home to Barkingside.
The draw for the fourth round will be broadcast on BBC Essex just after 4.30pm on Thursday.
Elsewhere, there are nine Red Insure Challenge Cup first-round ties tonight, with the most attractive being WIVENHOE TOWN’S home date with BRANTHAM ATHLETIC.
The sides have already met once this season, when Brantham won 4-1 on September 11.
FC CLACTON are also among the sides playing tonight and they face a trip to mid-table premier division rivals Felixstowe & Walton.
Ray Turner’s side will be hoping to bounce back from Saturday’s 6-2 defeat at Godmanchester Rovers.
One positive was a debut goal from new loan signing Jake Plane.
The Stanway youngster will be looking to impress again tonight.
