Regent climb a place but Stanway, Wivenhoe and Clacton defeated
BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT climbed a place to fourth in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division after a convincing 3-1 victory at Ely.
James Webster’s confident side made a dream start with two quick-fire goals in the first 22 minutes.
Ricky Griggs, who passed an 11th hour fitness test, smashed home after a scramble and Terry Rymer quickly made it 2-0.
Struggling Ely pulled one back but then had a let-off when Kevin Coyle missed a penalty for Brightlingsea.
The second half was more even and the hosts managed a spell of pressure.
But Regent’s two substitutes combined and it was Phil Kelly who played in Scott Yearling to make it 3-1.
The side directly below Brightlingsea, level on points, are Godmanchester Rovers – 6-2 conquerors of FC CLACTON.
New loanee Jake Plane marked his debut with a goal but, overall, it was a miserable afternoon for the Seasiders.
Elsewhere, there were defeats for both STANWAY ROVERS and WIVENHOE TOWN.
Stanway have added to their squad by signing Joe Ward on a month’s loan from Chelmsford City.
He was pitched straight into today’s starting line-up but finished on the losing side as Rovers went down 2-1 at Newmarket.
WIVENHOE TOWN were unable to build on last week’s opening victory as they lost 2-1 at Gorleston.
BRANTHAM ATHLETIC’S three-game winning run came to an end as they drew 2-2 at home to Thetford.
In division one, BRAINTREE TOWN RESERVES won 3-1 at March Town United.
HALSTEAD TOWN were in Red Insure Challenge Cup first-round action and made progress at the expense of Team Bury, winning 1-0.
