Swifts' FA Cup adventure comes to an end at Boreham Wood
HEYBRIDGE Swifts’ FA Cup adventure ground to a halt this afternoon after they lost 1-0 at Boreham Wood.
Substitute Matt Ball scored the hosts’ winner just eight minutes from time.
Swifts had been hoping to book their place in the first-round proper for the first time since 2002/03, when they lost to Bristol City.
And they more than held their own in a hard-fought, fiery and enjoyable contest.
It was also a match of few chances, with Swifts’ best opportunity being a late effort from Reece Morgan.
TJ Amass fed Neil Cousins down the right and the latter’s cross reached Morgan, but the midfielder failed to make proper contact and the opening went begging.
Morgan had earlier gone close from long-range while Russell Malton had Swifts’ best chance in the first half, but poked a close-range effort straight at goalkeeper James Russell.
It looked like the tie was heading for a replay until Wood, of the Conference South, snatched their winner in the 82nd minute.
A ball was played into the path of Ball, who calmly slotted a well-placed effort beyond Heybridge goalkeeper Nick Eyre.
