U's closing in on centre-back loan signing
Colchester United are hoping to seal the signing of a new centre-back on loan ahead of their game against Peterborough United on Saturday.
The U’s are close to landing a Championship defender on a short-term basis to boost their options in central defence.
Midfielder David Wright played alongside Magnus Okuonghae as a makeshift centre-back in the 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury Town last night, with Matt Taylor having returned to parent club Bradford City following the expiry of his loan spell and Josh Thompson, Tom Eastman and Daniel Pappoe all injured.
But Wright limped off in the closing stages and Freddie Sears was forced off with a hamstring problem in the first half, to add to Colchester’s lengthy injury list.
Dunne said: “We worked very hard to try and get a centre-half in before the (Shrewsbury) game.
“We thought we would have one in from a Championship club but unfortunately, that changed very late in the day.
“By that time, the other player that I’d lined up they decided to keep.
“Unfortunately, there was a delay because he played in an under-21 game.
“Then I phoned up another club yesterday on my way to the game and unfortunately, he’d already travelled to play in a game.
“We should get one sorted out in the next couple of days.”
