U's defender Eastman pleased for England star Townsend
Andros Townsend is aiming to help fire England to World Cup Finals qualification against Poland tonight.
And Colchester United defender Tom Eastman knows better than most what it is like to come up against the Three Lions’ man of the moment.
Eastman got to know well during the Spurs winger’s loan spell at Ipswich Town, during the 2010-11 season.
The pair played eight times together for the Blues under Roy Keane, during that campaign.
And U’s centre-back Eastman admits he had his work cut out dealing with Townsend’s pace and trickery when the duo regularly faced each other in training.
Eastman said: “Andros was a bit younger then, as I was and he was still learning his trade.
“But even then, I could tell he was going to be a top quality player.
“At the time, I was playing as a right-back for Ipswich and Andros was predominantly playing as a left midfielder.
“I came up against him a few times in training and I must admit, he beat me a few times.
“But even in training, you can learn a lot from a player like him.
“Andros was very speedy and he was quick off the mark.
“He was always trying to beat players and every time he got the ball, he would try a bit of trickery.
“We weren’t at Ipswich together for too long.
“But I could tell back then that he was going to be a good player and he’s developed very well over the last couple of years, at QPR and Spurs.
“He deserved to be man of the match against Montenegro and every time he got the ball, something looked like it was going to happen.
“Hopefully, he’ll carry it on tonight and it’s lovely to see him doing so well.”
