Rising star Sammie is praised by U's boss
Colchester United's side will be built around the likes of Sammie Szmodics and Alex Gilbey in future years, according to boss Joe Dunne.
The U's have fielded a host of young players in League One this season, with the likes of Drey Wright, Tosin Olufemi and Freddie Ladapo also featuring.
Former Stanway School pupil Szmodics is the latest Academy starlet to make the step up to first-team action, having made three substitute appearances over recent weeks.
And boss Dunne believes they represent the way forward for the club, in the coming years.
Dunne said: “Sammie epitomizes everything that we’re trying to do here at the moment.
“I thought Sammie had won me the game against Walsall with that block he made.
“He has wonderful enthusiasm and I believe whole-heartedly that the make up of the team over the next two or three years will be with players like Sammie and Alex Gilbey and we have got more to come."
Szmodics is set to feature in Colchester’s under-21 friendly at Norwich City today.
Daniel Pappoe, Tosin Olufemi, Freddie Ladapo, Conor Hubble and Jordan Sanderson are also expected to play against the Canaries.
