Colchester Gladiators crowned national champions
Colchester Gladiators are celebrating after being crowned national champions.
The triumphant Mill Road-based side finished a superb season on a huge high, following a 33-13 win over Gateshead Senators at the National Division Final in Leeds.
Casey Campbell scored a touchdown in the opening minutes to give the Gladiators a perfect start, at the John Charles Stadium.
And although Senators hit back in the second quarter, Ashley Latter ran 70 yards into the end zone to restore Gladiators’ advantage.
Gateshead levelled again before half-time but Gladiators were dominant after the interval with a further 20 points.
It was the perfect ending to what has been a memorable season for the Gladiators.
They did not lose a single game and had already been crowned National Division Southern champions.
Gladiators are set to be promoted to the top tier of American Football in the UK, following their success this season.
Their game at South Leeds Stadium was the warm-up for the Premier final between TV presenter Vernon Kay’s London Warriors and London Blitz.
