Gilbey: I want to play for U's
Alex Gilbey has insisted he is happy at Colchester United - despite his decision to turn down a new contract.
The talented 18-year-old scooped the man-of-the-match award in U’s 3-0 defeat against Wolves and has won plaudits for his recent performances.
Gilbey, whose current deal expires next summer, has started Colchester’s last five games in League One, playing in a variety of midfield positions.
And despite having initially rejected the chance to commit his future to the U’s, the former Newport County loanee stressed he wants to stay and play for manager Joe Dunne.
Gilbey said: “I’m really happy to be here and playing under the gaffer.
“I leave any speculation to other people but at the end of the day, I want to play for this club and under the gaffer.
“It really suits me playing under him with this style of play; I looked up to him as a young lad and now I’m playing for him.
“He gives young players a chance and you have to be confident as a youngster, knowing that he will do that.
“I’m really enjoying my football and I’m feeling confident.
“I don’t care if I’m playing out of position; as long as I’m playing games for this club, I’m happy.
“This is where I want to play my football, so it’s good to be in the starting line-up where I want to be.”
