Monakana desperate to win fitness battle ahead of Wolves clash
Jeffrey Monakana says he is desperate to win his battle to be fit for Colchester United’s home clash with high-flying Wolves this weekend.
The 19-year-old winger became the latest addition to the U’s injury list when he suffered a calf problem in their 1-1 draw with Bristol City, last Saturday.
Monakana admits he is still trying to improve his fitness levels, having had his pre-season disrupted by injury.
But the former Arsenal teenager says he is determined to be ready for the visit of promotion-chasing Wolves, one of the U’s biggest games of the season.
Monakana said: “Playing a team like Wolves at home is the kind of game that any player want to play in.
“I’ll be doing my best to be fit for that game and I want to play as much as possible.
“I just picked up a little calf injury against Bristol City and I don’t think it’s anything damaging.
“I’m still a long way from full fitness - I never really had a pre-season and I’m still building it up slowly.
“But I think the more games that I play, the better it will be.”
Monakana said he has enjoyed playing under manager Joe Dunne during his loan spell at the U’s from League One rivals, Preston North End.
The skilful wide-man has been given plenty of licence to attack opposition defences, in the three games he has played for Colchester.
Monakana said: “I’m really enjoying my time at Colchester so far.
“The atmosphere is great and hopefully we can start pushing on and start turning those draws into wins.
“The gaffer’s great and he’s trying to get the best out of me and the team.
“We have a manager who’s very positive and knows what he wants us to do.
“He wants us to be expansive, attack and play great football, so for players like me that’s a bonus.
“Hopefully, I can go on and keep learning off him so that I can do the fans the club proud.
“We’re disappointed we didn’t get the win at Bristol City.
“We could have got a winner in the last couple of minutes but it was another game we can build on.”
