Baltacha is to open new tennis courts

FORMER British number one Elena Baltacha is set to visit Frinton.
The Suffolk-based player is officially opening Frinton Lawn Tennis Club’s new £250,000 floodlit hard courts and will be guest of honour during a special invite-only ceremony on Tuesday.
Baltacha, who has often used the Holland Road courts for practice ahead of Wimbledon, has been invited to cut the ribbon alongside Cathie Sabin, deputy president of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
“It’s been a long haul but, six years later, with great support and encouragement from the LTA, we’ve reached our watershed moment,” said Frinton chairman Roger Evans.
“The completion of our all-weather courts will give us a superb base to expand and develop the future of the club.
“We want to celebrate this achievement by being able to thank all those involved and it’s a very generous offer from Elena to come and join in the day’s fun.
“We want to encourage new members of all ages and abilities to come and enjoy our sport so I would urge everyone to come down and get involved in the day.”
A six-year project, the development of the courts has coincided with the club revamping its junior and schools programme, developing a tennis academy programme and expanding its tournament programme to attract the highest quality tennis.
The launch is a chance to celebrate the achievements of the club and plenty of their juniors are expected to get on court and show what they can do with a racket in hand.
The LTA contributed a grant of £72,000, as well as a loan of the same amount. As well as investment from the LTA and the Essex County LTA, Sport England’s Inspired Facilities granted the club £50,000. A further £10,000 was contributed from club funds.
The public are welcome at the club for an open day on Saturday, September 21, where they will be running special introductory offers.
