Howlett has gold medal in his sights

TERRY Howlett has more golden glory in his sights.
The 70-year-old hockey veteran, from Dovercourt, is heading to Belgium this weekend as part of the England senior grandmasters team bound for the European Championships.
The side are playing in a round-robin contest against rivals from Germany and Holland. And Howlett is confident he can return with another gold medal to add to the collection he has already won during his illustrious career.
He said: “We’re the current European champions and we beat both Germany and Holland during last year’s World Cup in Oxford. We’ve added to our squad and, on a personal note, I still feel as enthusiastic as ever.
“We’re focused on success and it would be fantastic to come back with another gold medal.”
Howlett’s current haul includes two golds and two silvers at World Cups and four golds at European Championships. He was part of the England senior grandmasters team that reached the World Cup final last year, only to be pipped by Australia.
Howlett is heading to Kontich, in Belgium, this morning and he and his team-mates will play their first game, against Germany, on Sunday.
The matches then come thick and fast, with fixtures against Holland on Monday and Thursday and the second Germany showdown on Wednesday. Tuesday is a rest day.
“It’s four games in five days, which is a lot of hockey,” said Howlett, who is a member of Colchester Hockey Club.
