U's squander two-goal lead to draw with Sky Blues

Colchester United relinquished a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Coventry City tonight.

Gavin Massey put the U's ahead just before half-time and when Michael Smith doubled the lead with 19 minutes to go, it looked as though Joe Dunne's side were on their way to victory.

But Coventry substitute Callum Wilson reduced the deficit soon after and skipper Carl Baker slammed home a free-kick in stoppage-time to salvage a draw for the home side, For a full match report and pictures, see Wednesday's Gazette.

I listened to the commentary on BBC Essex and yet again we conceded a goal to equalise right at the death - 92 minutes. Just why can't we hold on? The team had done more than enough to win the game, they just needed to see it out, but they concede a free kick on the edge of the penalty area and low and behold they score. Such a shame! The only worry is that Oldham now have three games in hand over us and are only four points behind us. We can only hope that they and Scunthorpe slip up and we win at Bury on Saturday. Up the U's!!

I just hope squandering two goal leads like we did at Coventry last night, Shrewsbury and Crewe (an eventual 3 - 2 defeat) doesn't come back to haunt us in the final analysis. After having been at the match last night, once Coventry pulled a goal back we dropped deeper and deeper in defence to the point that conceding a second was almost inevitable. When will our defence learn how to hold a high line, particularly when under intense pressure.
