U's stalwart Owen returns in scouting revamp

Brian Owen has returned to Colchester United, as part of the club's revamped scouting network.

Owen returns to the U's for a fourth spell as their chief recruitment scout, having previously represented them as a player, coach, scout and physio.

Owen played for Colchester between 1970 and 1972 and rejoined the club in 1993 as a coach and then a scout, before leaving in 2009.

Owen's return is part of a restructuring of the scouting system at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

U's boss Joe Dunne said: "We need people here who know and love the club and I think we've lost that a bit over recent years.

"When you look around our club, only me and Mark Kinsella have been here before.

"I want people at this club who will run through a brick wall for me and I know that I have people here who will do that."

Very pleased to hear that Brian is back, but he should never have been discarded in the first place. It would be wonderful if a role could now be found for another U's legend ,who also has blue and white coursing through his veins: Steve Wignall, one of the best and perhaps most under-rated of all U's managers.

Another would be Steve Foley whose entire career was with U's yet his senior coaching positions have been with Norwich and Ipswich. Dunne and Kinsella would benefit greatly from the vast experience that the likes of Wignall and Foley would offer. Good to see Brian Owen back.

I do think another would be Richard Wilkins as he is going well at Bury Town, i also feel bringing in Peter Cawley as he has managerial experience and is a legend at the U's.

We could end up with a venerable squad of great coaches! How elastic is Mr Cowling's budget?! Seriously it's documented that Wiggy would like to return in an advisory role to a younger manager (in his autobiography I believe) – is the stage set??

Bamptonian, I thought that Wiggy was now of the opinion that he wanted to run his guesthouse or hotel, which I think is back nearer Liverpool? Seem to remember him talking about that at some point.

Great to see Brian back, and love the list of names above. It would be like a holding room full of ex-U's that Joe could just call out at any point.

Merry Christmas all!

RC should never have got rid of the scouting set-up in the first place. By getting rid of all those people with many years experience, not just on the scouting front, but also from other areas of the club, has cost Col Utd. dear. Welcome back Brian Owen!
