The pedigree of Chelsea’s youngsters proved just too much for Colchester United’s young guns as their under-18s bowed out of the FA Youth Cup with a 3-2 third round defeat.
Premier League quality was evident as Chelsea dominated much of the possession at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, but it was a brave attempt by the young U’s, particularly in the second half.
They stuck to their passing principles throughout and showed that the club’s faith in its development of youth is bearing fruit for the future.
A first-half goal by Jack Simmons and one in the 56th minute from Sam Szmodics, following a beautifully-worked move down the right, kept Colchester in the cup tie.
However, two goals from Islam Feruz and one by Lewis Baker before the break gave Chelsea the breathing space they needed to progress.
