A university professor who was described as a "methodical" man deliberately took steps to kill himself, an inquest heard.
Dr Alastair Crockett, of Ladysmith Avenue, Brightlingsea, was found dead by police on September 16 in woods, near Alresford Creek, after going missing.
A post-mortem examination showed he died from inhaling the fumes from a camping gas stove.
The inquest heard Dr Crockett was diagnosed with Lyme Disease, an infection caused by a tick bite, ten years ago and was suffering from depression.
Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray said Dr Crockett, who worked at Essex University, had deliberately taken steps which would end his life.
Speaking to Dr Crockett's wife Frances, she added: "I wish you well with bringing up your two children and hope you are able to dwell on the happy, positive memories of him and your life together."
Mrs Beasley-Murray recorded a verdict saying Dr Crockett had killed himself.
