Binmen collect 98 per cent of rubbish despite the snow

THE snowy conditions have barely affected Colchester’s refuse collection system.

The council’s binmen have collected almost all of the bags left out this week.

Council bosses praised the dedicated staff who have had to walk up to 15 miles a day to collect the rubbish.

Dave McManus, street services and recycling manager, said it was one of few councils that had continued its rounds during the bad weather with 98 per cent of collections carried out on Wednesday and 99 per cent on Thursday. A similar stasistic is expected to be achieved today.

Any households that did not have their rubbish picked up will have to wait until next week's collection.

Brilliant bunch of guys. I am out in a village with no gritting on our roads, yet these guys have been and gone with my rubbish - no problems. There's a lesson to be learned there somewhere. My kids are off school because of the weather - due to insurance reasons apparantly.

I agree with Sdapeze - the Colchester binmen deserve every penny they get. They have done a very good job in difficult circumstances.

Well done bin men ,all the refuse collected even the green waste .
I hope the knee jerk councllors will share the same sentiments as the other correspondents and protect your jobs next time Lord of the manner decides private is best and goes for the lowest tender and we end up with a RUBBISH service (pun intended)

Must agree they are doing a darn good job in this weather.
Okay so we had no collection for a few weeks and, quite honestly ,I wouldn't expect them to risk their safety. Answer to problem was ,we took it to the dump.
I realise that not everyone can do this ,but if you can ,then you should.at the end of the day we have not had weather this bad for ages and we can't really complain. They are doing their upmost to get the job done . Try driving one of the carts round snow covered icy roads with cars parked both sides and then see if you have the right to complain.

I agree with most of these comments. Yesteerday the crews did a great job in our street, which is not gritted. They were walking, not running, and a good job too, we don't want them getting hurt. Brilliant guys. I hope they are getting paid overtime for the extra hours it must be taking.
I'm sorry for ykoops and the General, whose rubbish wasn't collected, but hope you will have better luck next week.

I live in a remote villiage and our rubbish was collected in the middle of a snow downfall on a road that hasn't been gritted for days. They were even helping the eldery by taking the rubbish out for them so they didn't slip on the driveways. I have lived in various areas in Colchester and have always been impressed by the rubbish crews.
But of course we now live in a world where everyone expects everything done for them and moans when it's not possible. As already said where possible take it to a tip. Our rubbish crews have done a brilliant job in bad conditions and deserve all the praise they get

The snow wasn't a problem for my collections it was the fact that my scheduled collection is a Monday which meant that we had to miss a round of collections. So 98% of collections took place on time because of the adverse weather but on 80% of collectinos took place wek commencing the 28/12/09 becuase of Christmas. Statistics!!! Statistics!!! Statistics!!!

That aside, I too have nothing but praise for the collectors who do a fantastic job all year round not only during the winter. Perhaps Colchester Borough Council's senior management and their portfolio holder Mr Young should put their money where their mouths are and pay these guys what they are worth. As wages go, Colchester waste staff are amoungst the lowest paid waste collectors in the whole of Essex!!!!!
