Townsfolk join the campaign to save Roman circus

By Lauren Oldershaw »

CHILDREN were treated to a talk by a popular children’s author and an appearance by a television star in an event to boost funds for Colchester Roman Circus Appeal.

Caroline Lawrence shared her wealth of knowledge on the subject of ancient Rome when she gave a talk, based on a day at the Circus Maximus.

It was especially devised for her appearance in the town.

About 100 youngsters, their parents and grandparents supported the event at the Colchester Arts Centre.

It was one of a number of events being put on in to raise enough money to save the Roman circus and preserve it for future generations.

Dressed in traditional Roman clothes, Ms Lawrence spoke to the audience about her series of 18 books, the Roman Mysteries, how she came up with her characters and her different themes before giving a description of what would have happened at a chariot race.

She also focused on what the race track at Colchester would have looked like and brought a replica of the Colchester beaker made to commemorate race days.

Ms Lawrence, who lives in London and is originally from California, said: “Pieces of it were found at Colchester and no-one knew why such a beaker would have been in Colchester, then the roman circus was discovered and it all made sense.

“I got some friends of mine to make me an exact replica.”

Ms Lawrence was joined on stage by 16-year-old Colchester actress Millie Binks to talk about her experiences appearing in two television series adapted from the books.

After a question and answer session, the duo signed copies of Ms Lawrence’s books, which were included in the ticket price.

Ms Lawrence added: “It is brilliant to be involved in something like this.

“Instead of having homes on top, it is essential to preserve the starting gates.”

The Gazette deserves a national award for its positive promotion and support of the Roman Circus. A truly remarkable part of our history that has captured the support across the generations. Even our local politicians have backed down in the face of the mass enthusiasm. A great start to 2010.

Well said Mr Hamilton.

I'm 100 per cent behind the Save The Roman Circus appeal, but frankly I think the Sergeants' Mess is a red herring and would cost a huge amount of money to put into order. If we could get the garden and the starting gates without the Mess that would be ideal - and much cheaper too

Spot on Bing. That is what was tried at the beginning. Taylor Wimpy would not sell the gardens separately. They wanted the future occupiers of their flats to have a nice garden. That is why the appeal has been forced to buy both. Have a work with Taylor Wimpey. Get them to change their mind. Make a name for yourself. Better still, get that twit Lucas to do it rather than to muddy the pitch with his daft ideas. He is a liability to his party!

Let us remember that conservative led Essex County Council has not given one penny to this appeal - unlike Colchester Borough Council who have shown tremendous support.

I hold no torch, Roman or otherwise for 'Johnny come lately' Lucas. I do think Taylor W might be more willing to deal if they are told their building is unsaleable. I think the borough council, who have been well on board, could talk TW round.

Put yourself in TW's hands. All they want is money. Lots of it. They could not give a toss about Colchester - as they have regularly demonstrated. They are about to get a buyer. The appeal has raised the money thanks to a huge public response. Why would they change their minds now? If they did, what would the appeal money be used for? It was given on the basis of buying the land and the building to save the circus. Children have given their pocket money. Everyday people have gone out of their way to give money to something that the County Council should have done years ago. Wise **** talk like this at this time in the process is unhelpful.
