ROLL up for the Roman chari-kart race!

Colchester’s Indikart go-kart track is joining the fight to save the Roman circus, by hosting a charity night to boost the appeal.

For the occasion the centre’s track will be laid out in imitation of the oval design of the old chariot-racing arena, which was unearthed in 2004, near Abbey Field.

Instead of chariots pulled by teams of four horses, competitors will drive Honda go-karts with 5.5 horsepower engines.

Nick Harris, of Indikart, said: “Colchester’s Roman circus has been described as the Brands Hatch or Silverstone of its day, so staging a race seemed like the perfect way to help out.

“It should be a great evening and everyone who takes part will have the satisfaction of knowing they have helped save a piece of history for generations to come.”

Teams of four drivers are invited for the endurance event, which starts at 7pm on Wednesday.

Drivers will take turns at the wheel over a period of two hours, with first prize going to the team which completes most laps within the allotted time.

Spaces are available for as many as ten teams, with drivers each paying £40.

Indikart is offering a free hog roast for the drivers – also available to non-drivers for £3.50. To book a place, call 01206 799511.

Marching for cash
AN army of Colchester youngsters went on the march to help save the Roman circus.

Parents of pupils at Hamilton Primary School organised a half-term sponsored walk around the Spring Lane field, off Lexden Road, to raise cash for the appeal fund.

And as an army marches on its stomach, the group then headed back to mum Michelle Barker’s house for a picnic.
