Speed limits could be cut outside schools

Plans to make it easier for councils to introduce 20mph speed zones could aid campaigns across the district.

Humber Road Estate residents group has been pushing to introduce 20mph limits on the Humber Road straight.

But until now, the the scheme has met with opposition from highways chiefs and the police because it would be too difficult to enforce.

Now the Government has said it wants to encourage 20mph limits in residential streets and around schools, shops and play areas.

Community groups and headteachers could apply for variable limits around schools and would not need to get Government permission for further 20mph zones.

With all the road parking in the area I am surprised anyone can get up to 20 mph quite frankly. You have to weave in and out of the parked vehicles to get around any estate in Witham.
