Maldon: Councillors support post office move

THE relocation of Maldon’s post office has been backed by councillors.

During a meeting of the council last night, members agreed to support Post Office Ltd’s proposal to move the existing post office from 47 High Street to alternative premises further down the road at 9-10A King Georges Place.

Councillors expressed hope that the relocation could help “regenerate” the lower part of the High Street.

Leader John Archer (Con, Purleigh) said: “We have got to thank our lucky stars that we are retaining a post office.”

Brian Beale (Ind, Southminster) said: “Let’s utilise it and take advantage. We have an opportunity to put something down there and the post office is a start.”

However, Richard Dewick (Con, Tillingham) countered: “It is moving the post office away from the centre and it is making life harder for people to use it.

“Post Office Ltd don’t seem particularly interested in shop frontage and it gives them an excuse in future to close it. I don’t think there is anything we can do about it.”

Members voted to support the move.

A consultation by Post Office Ltd ends on February 28, with the change expected to come into effect from March.
