Burnham: 'Roundabout is not the answer'

Burnham: 'Roundabout is not the answer' Burnham: 'Roundabout is not the answer'

A BUSINESSMAN is questioning whether building a mini-roundabout at a problem Burnham junction is justified.

Bob Calver, of Fernlea Road, Burnham, says asking residents for £25,000 to build the roundabout at Fiveways junction is unrealistic and would be a waste of money.

Mr Calver, who works in London, has carried out research which shows since 2007 there have only been three collisions at the junction.

The first, on February 28, 2007, when 77-year-old Derek Huggins was hit by the wing mirror having been dropped off by his driver was only a slight accident, though Mr Huggins later died in Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, after contracting pneumonia.

On November 6, 2010, a car collided with a cyclist while turning right out of Devonshire Road.

A slight accident also occurred when a car in Devonshire Road revered into a pedestrian on June 27.

£25k?!?!? It doesn't need a roundabout built! Just paint one on, I'll do it for a tenner! The junction is a problem because it can take an age to join Station Road if traffic is frequent. I have often just edged out and blocked traffic simply to get out of the side road. Whoever thinks it needs £25k to sort needs their head tested. And dont start quoting H&S.

The only good thing about the present Fiveway junction is that everyone emerging out of the 'side roads' has to be fully alert and very careful. Visiting the Colchester area shows that adding mini roundabouts to existing conventionally designed junctions solve nothing ... In fact they cause dangerous confusion and over confidence . In addition at night in wet conditions the mini roundabout markings and bumps can't be seen clearly adding a fresh dimension of danger.

The existing situation isn't ideal, but a better solution is frankly well beyond economic reach. The new Exhibition Road layout in London shows that 'less can be more' in these situations. Stripping away clutter adds to safety by making every road user and pedestrian fully aware of the dangers and their need to be careful. In short, don't spend £25 000 or even £10. Just improve sight lines and remove distractions.

How about a 'zero' cost option ? Just ask the owner of the Suzuki Jeep that always parks outside the newsagents to do so elsewhere (example) like the car-park across the road! That way the whole road layout will be unobstructed, therefore reducing the likelihood of any future accidents.

Since 2007 there have only been three collisions at the junction and ONLY ONE of these has been directly attributed to the junction.
Derek Huggins was hit by the wing mirror having been dropped off by his driver
A slight accident also occurred when a car in Devonshire Road revered into a pedestrian
NEITHER OF THESE RELATE DIRECTLY TO THE JUNCTION.

The suzuki jeep belongs to the manager of the newsagents - he thinks its his right to park outside his shop, even though he does cause an obstruction.

I have used this junction for several years and never had a problem with it - yes I have had to wait for several minutes before getting out - but that is no different to any other junction.

agree with El Presendente - get the Jeep moved. Paint double yellow lines on all approaches to the junction and get a traffic warden to monitor them.
