THIEVES stole a car after breaking into a home and taking the keys.
The criminals forced a door in Westerings, Danbury, sometime between 10.45pm on Monday September 6 and 6.30am on Tuesday September 7 and stole electrical equipment and the keys to a black Audi A4.
They then drove the car, registration KM56 VUH, and drove away from the scene.
The value of the stolen items is around £22,000, and £30 damage was caused to the door.
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact CID at Chelmsford on 0300 333 4444, and have issued advice to homeowners on security.
Det Ch Insp Mark Wheeler said: "There are a few simple steps that people can take to make themselves even safer. It’s good to ensure that you keep your keys somewhere safe and out of sight.
“In addition, do not leave cash, bags and wallets lying around. Please keep all accessible doors and window closed and locked.
“If you have uPVC doors, please ensure that you lock the door with the key - just pulling up the handle does not deadlock the door. If you have a garage, please try to lock your vehicle away safely inside it."
