A budding mosaic maker from Maldon has reached the final of a coveted national competition.
Claire Thomson, of Cross Road, Maldon, is a relative novice, having just completed a beginner’s course in mosaic under the tutelage of local artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding, but still made it through as one of 18 finalists in the Topps Tiles Awards for Achievement in Mosaic.
More than 250 students across the country entered the competition, with Claire and her fellow finalists having their work judged before the overall winner is announced later this month.
The national winner will receive a £500 commission for a mosaic artwork, to be exhibited at the Topps Tiles headquarters, near Leicester.
Ms Thomson, 39, has already received a certificate and cheque for £100 for making it this far, while teacher Anne Schwegmann-Fielding has been awarded with store vouchers worth £300 to buy coursework materials.
