Police are pleading for anybody who witnessed a fatal collision at Rettendon Common this morning to come forward.

A motorcyclist was killed at 7.30am after colliding with an oncoming car on Main Road at Rettendon Common.

The rider, who has been named as 52-year-old James Lawton from Ingatestone, was heading south-bound, ahead of four friends also on motorcycles, when his bike collided with a silver Chevrolet Matiz, driven by a 19-year-old woman from the Southend area.

The road was closed for more than six hours while officers carried out an initial investigation, but the police are still eager to hear from anyone who was travelling in the area around the time of the collision.

Witnesses should contact PC Roy Levett at Dunmow Road Policing Unit on 0300 333 4444.
