PROTESTORS aim to raise awareness about the dangers a new nuclear power station could create at Bradwell.

The Blackwater Against New Nuclear Group (BANNG) will stage a protest at the Strood at Mersea Island on Thursday April 9.

At high tide, the island is cut off from the mainland and the group’s intention is to highlight the dangers posed by a new nuclear power station at Bradwell.

If there were to be a major incident from the accidental release of radioactivity, this would create a danger to the residents of the island and surrounding areas, including Tollesbury.

BANNG will also be demonstrating against other dangers including, the storage of highly radioactive spent fuel at the site, the threat to marine life from the removal of large volumes of cooling water and the damage to the peace and tranquillity of the vulnerable Blackwater Estuary.

Professor Andy Blowers, chair of BAANG, said: “It would be difficult to evacuate the island at any time but when it is cut off by the tide, evacuation would be nigh impossible.

“We are urging people to wake up and recognise the damage and dangers that a new nuclear power station at Bradwell poses to them and future generations.

“Bradwell is a totally unsatisfactory site and we are encouraging the local communities around the estuary to join our campaign”.

High tide is expected at 1.08pm on Thursday.

Anyone who would like to show their support should arrive from 12pm.
