I WOULD like to make the following points with reference to Alex Jennings’ letter of January 25.

First, to suggest that “huge sums”

will flow into the NHS following our exit from the EU shows a failure to understand that there will be no so called “Brexit dividend”.

Instead, as we are seeing, our economy is growing at such a slow pace, with wage inflation less than actual inflation since 23 June 2016.

Mark Carney has said that Brexit has already cost us £200 million per week, so, if we are to look for money to invest in the NHS it will need to come from a source distinct from this fantasy of a Brexit dividend.

Second, I wonder how we’ll operate a functioning NHS when doctors and nurses are leaving the UK in high numbers. We’ll need to plug the gap somehow.

Third, your magic cure of slashing the foreign aid budget - a dog whistled trope of right wing callers to LBC - manifests a Trumpian and isolationist agenda which will only weaken our already lonely position in the world (numerous empty seats for May at Davos).

Remember that foreign aid is a sign of a state’s compassion and, in light of the many wars we have conducted and our imperialistic past, is the least we can do.
