AN ALL-STAR production which will commemorate a late and great musician will be performed in Maldon this week.

macTheatre are bringing “SWARB! It Suits Him Well” to Maldon Town Hall on Friday, commemorating the great Dave Swarbrick.

The musician was a well-known British folk artist who died in June 2016, and was once described as “the most influential British fiddle player”.

Joining together to pay tribute to Swarb’s matchless career will be his dear pals, Folk legend, Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick, alongside the Reggae artist Jason Wilson and his Band joined by fiddling protégé and nephew, Simon Swarbrick.

The evening will cover the legacy that is Swarb’s immense catalogue: from his Folk traditions with Beryl Marriott to the BBC Radio Ballads (Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, A.L.Lloyd), Ian Campbell Folk Group, to the groundbreaking duo of Carthy and Swarbrick, the golden years of Fairport Convention and work from his blazing “red” collaborations with the late Singer/Songwriter Alister Hulett.

Maldon’s own David Hughes will be opening the show with his congenial warmth and witty style. His career has seen him tour with Bert Jansch, Fairport Convention and Pentangle and he has just finished a highly successful tour with St Agnes Fountain, the Christmas Band of Chris While, Julie Matthews and Chris Leslie.

Special guest of the evening will be the American saxophonist, composer and arranger Alfred ‘Pee Wee’ Ellis. An important member of James Brown’s band in the 60s, appearing on Brown’s most notable recordings and co-writing a number of his hits, he has also worked closely with Van Morrison.

As well as a friend, he was part of the two albums Wilson & Swarbrick have produced and it is a great privilege to hear him play in Maldon.

Tickets for the event cost £18 each, with the show beginning at the town hall on Friday at 8pm.
