We remembered them.

In schools, at clubs, on sports fields.

On our High Streets, in shops, in pubs and while at home.

We remembered them.

From the thousands who gathered at the various memorials around the district, county and country to the millions watching on television.

We remembered them.

Maybe it is the fact we are 100 years on from the horrors of the First World War.

Maybe it is because of rising international tensions.

Or maybe it is because fewer of our veterans are still with us.

But it seems the pride, emotion and connection felt for our fallen heroes has not diminished.

We can be proud Essex residents last year donated more to the Royal British Legion for the Poppy Appeal than any other county.

Considering the number of people proudly displaying the symbol this year we may have even surpassed that total.

Next year, 100 years on from Armistice Day, will be an even bigger occasion.
